Dr. Nirenberg of East Valley Ophthalmology is highly experienced in performing treatments throughout the face with Juvederm. He knows how to get great results and when another filler might be a better option.
Juvederm injectable gel adds volume and smoothness to your face by
gently filling in facial wrinkles and folds like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” (the
creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of
your mouth). Juvederm comes in two formulations — Juvederm Ultra
and Juvederm Ultra Plus.
Where Juvéderm Can Be Used
Juvederm is a very flexible injectable filler that can be used in most places where additional volume is desired. This includes:
- Lip augmentation
- Hollows under the eyes
- Sunken cheeks
- Nasolabial folds (parenthesis lines around the mouth)
Because of its smoothness, some people prefer the results of Juvederm in lip augmentation and treatment wherever the skin is very thin. Although Juvederm can last for up to a year, the length of results depends on the area being treated, with lips lasting the shortest and under eye hollows the longest.
Immediate Results!
With Juvederm, the injection process takes only about 15
minutes and results are immediate. Plus, there's minimal recovery
or downtime. So you can step into our office for treatment
and step right back into your life.
Frequently Asked Questions about Juvederm
What is Juvederm?
Juvederm injectable gels are non-animal based, colorless
hyaluranic acid gels that are injected into the facial tissue to
smoothe wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth.
What makes Juvederm different from other dermal fillers?
Juvederm is the ONLY hyaluronic acid dermal filler FDA approved
to last up to one year. The unique process that goes
into manufacturing Juvederm provides a high concentration of cross-linked
hyaluronic acid for long-lasting results. It also works to create
a gel of smooth consistency that flows easily into the skin and
provides a completely natural look and feel. All other hyaluronic
acid dermal fillers currently on the market are made of granular
consistency gels. And, Juvederm is
the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has demonstrated its
safety and effectiveness in persons of color.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance normally found in
the skin, muscles, and tendons of all mammals,
including the human body. Its purpose is to deliver nutrients,
hydrate the skin by holding in water, and act as a cushioning agent.
In addition to its use as an aesthetic treatment, hyaluronic acid has
also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints
to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair.
What is cross-linked hyaluronic acid?
“Uncross-linked” hyaluronic acid in its natural form is
in a liquid state. “Cross-linking” is the process through
which hyaluronic acid is made into a gel product that can be injected
into the skin for long-lasting results.
How is Juvederm different from Botox Cosmetic?
Juvederm injectable gel is a “next-generation” hyaluronic
acid dermal filler that provides volume and is used to treat wrinkles
and folds resulting from a loss of volume beneath the surface of
the skin, such as perioral lines and nasolabial folds (lines around
your mouth and nose). Juvederm restores your skin's volume for
a smooth, natural look and feel.
Botox Cosmetic is not a dermal
filler. Botox Cosmetic relaxes muscle activity and is used to treat moderate
to severe lines caused by the dominant frown muscles between the
eyebrows (the glabellar area). This allows the two vertical lines
between the brows, often referred to as the “11,” to temporarily
diminish for a smoother appearance.
How does Juvederm work?
Dr. Nirenberg gently eases Juvederm injectable gel into the mid to
deep dermis (below the outer layer of skin) using a
fine needle. The Juvederm fills in moderate to severe facial
wrinkles and folds such as “smile
lines” or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds) and “marionette
lines” (oral commissures). Juvederm temporarily
adds volume and smoothness to facial tissue and thereby restores
a more youthful appearance to the face. Most patients need just
one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. Optimal results
are achieved when the treatment area is readily distensible and
correction can be visualized by manual manipulation (stretching)
of the skin. Results typically last six months to one year.
Juvederm works well for cosmetic and plastic surgery applications
because hyaluronic acid can absorb up to 1000 times its own weight
in water, thereby adding new volume under the surface of sagging
skin. Older faces take on more youthful aspects because hyaluronic acid
is known to bind with collagen -- the material that supports human facial
skin -- and elastin to move more basic nutrients into the skin.
Moreover, Juvederm continues working as time goes on by adding even more
collagen to the face.
Why does Juvederm come in two formulations?
Juvederm comes in two formulations, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm
Ultra Plus, to
allow Dr. Nirenberg to tailor treatment to your unique needs.
- Juvederm
Ultra provides versatility in contouring
and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds.
- Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust
formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles
Can people with different skin colors be treated
with Juvederm?
Yes. In fact, Juvederm injectable gel is the first FDA-approved
hyaluronic acid dermal filler that has proven its safety and effectiveness
in persons of color. Studies with Juvederm showed no increased
risk of hyperpigmentation or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.
How long does a Juvederm treatment usually take?
The injection process takes only about 15 minutes. You'll also need
to allow time to consult with Dr. Nirenberg prior to treatment. Prior
to wrinkle treatment with Juvederm injectable gel, your complete
medical history will be reviewed and you will be informed
of the details of the Juvederm treatment process, benefits, results,
and potential side effects.
Are Juvederm injections painful?
Injections may cause some discomfort during and after the injection.
The amount of pain you experience would depend on your individual
tolerance. However, the smooth consistency gel of Juvederm allows
Dr. Nirenberg to administer it easily and smoothly using a fine
needle. To further minimize discomfort,
Dr. Nirenberg may choose to numb the treatment area with either
a topical or local injectable anesthetic.
What precautions should I take following my
Juvederm procedure?
Dr. Nirenberg will explain in detail what precautions to take following
your Juvederm treatment, including when you may resume use of
cosmetics. In general, as with any injection site, patients
may have mild to moderate reactions that will
typically resolve within a few days. For best possible results,
you should avoid strenuous exercise,
extensive sun or heat exposure, and all alcoholic beverages for
24 hours. Exposure to any of these may cause temporary
redness, swelling and/or itching at the injection sites. The
application of an ice pack will bring relief.
Does the Juvederm correction last forever?
No. Correction is temporary; therefore,
you should be aware that supplemental “touch up” treatments
may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results. However, Juvederm
is the ONLY hyaluronic acid filler FDA approved to last up to one
year, which makes it the longest lasting dermal filler now available.
What are the possible side effects of Juvederm injectable
gel?
Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration
is short lasting (usually less than a week). The most common
side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injections
site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling,
lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all
skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection.
Safety Profile:
- Frequency and severity of treatment site responses were similar to
control treatment sites during extensive clinic studies.
- The smooth, uniform consistency of Juvederm allows
it to flow easily and consistently into the skin.
- Studies
with Juvederm showed no increased risk of hyperpigmentation
or hypertrophic scarring in patients of color.
Who should NOT receive Juvederm injectable
gel?
Dr. Nirenberg will ask about your medical history to determine if you
are a candidate for Juvederm treatment.
Juvederm should NOT be
used in patients who have:
- Severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis or a history of
or presence of multiple server allergies
- Patient with a history of allergies to Gram-positive bacterial proteins.
What else should I know about Juvederm?
The following are important considerations for you to discuss with
Dr. Nirenberg in order to achieve your best possible results. It
is vital that you inform Dr. Nirenberg if any of these might apply
to you:
- If you are using substances that are known to prolong bleeding
or bruising at the injection site, such as aspirin or ibuprofin,
discontinue at least one week prior to your treatment with Juvederm.
- If you are considering laser treatment of your skin, chemical
peeling, or any procedure that is based on an active dermal response,
as there is a possible risk of an inflammatory reaction at the
treatment site.
- If you are on any kind of immunosuppressive therapy or therapy used
to decrease your body's immune respons, as there may be an increased
risk of infection.
- If you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding,
as safety for these conditions has not been established.
- If you are under 18 years of age,
as safety for this age group has not been established.
- If you have a history of excessive scarring (hypertorphic scarring
and Keloid formations) and/or pigmentation disorders,
as safety for these conditions has not been established.
Although Juvederm has also been used as a lip augmentation agent,
to fill in hollow places and scars on the face, the safety and
effectiveness of Juvederm for the treatment of areas other than
facila wrinkles and folds (such as lips) have not been established
in controlled clinical studies.
What did clinical studies on Juvederm show?
Juvederm was the subject of the largest United States clinical
study ever conducted on hyaluronic acid dermal fillers.
- Subjects were followed for 24 weeks after injection.
- Juvederm
injectable gel was injected in one nasolabial fold and
Zyplast (a bovine-based injectable dermal filler made from
collagen) in the other.
- Injection sites responses were similar for Juvederm and
Zyplast, usually mild or moderate in severity, lasting only
a day or so.
- Juvederm was found to provide a more persistant wrinkle
correction than Zyplast within the 24-week study.
- The percentage of subjects who maintained improvement
within the study was 88% with Juvderm compared to 36% with
Zyplast.
- 78%-88% of patients preferred Juvederm injectable
gel at six months post-treatment.
- Patients overwhelmingly preferred Juvderm products
over study control.
