IOL Power Calculations

Measurements for lens implants before cataract surgery

East Valley Ophthalmology is world-renowned for its expertise in intraocular lens power calculations, particularly in unusual situations, such as after LASIK or RK, and for determining the appropriate type of premium lens implant.

Patients are referred to us by other eye surgeons for these calculations before cataract surgery. This is because our practice utilizes technologically advanced equipment and methodologies that many other practices do not, as well as the specific skills and experience necessary for accurate outcomes. Suppose you have received a referral for this service. In that case, it is most likely due to something atypical about your eyes that makes standard methods of measurement unreliable or the calculations especially difficult.

Examples of difficult situations

  • Variable axial length measurements
  • An inability to obtain axial length measurements
  • Significant difference between right and left eye measurements
  • Prior keratorefractive surgery (LASIK, RK, PRK, CK, LASEK)
  • Prior retinal detachment surgery with or without a scleral buckle
  • Prior vitrectomy
  • Eyes containing silicone oil
  • Eyes that are very farsighted or very nearsighted
  • Eyes with certain inherited diseases
  • Prior ocular trauma
  • Mature cataracts that prohibit a clear view of the back of the eye

For your lens power calculations

  • Your eyes will be measured using the latest advancements in state-of-the-art technology.
  • The IOL power calculations will be performed personally by Dr. Hill.
  • A detailed report will be sent to your referring physician.

Financial responsibility

For intraocular lens power calculations, Dr. Hill only sees patients when asked to do so by other eye surgeons. And this is only when the measurements are either technically too complex or the intraocular lens power calculations are mathematically too complex for a general ophthalmologist to carry out.

Medicare
Dr. Hill is a Medicare provider. Our office will submit a claim for services covered by Medicare. For any non-covered Medicare services, payment is your responsibility on the day of your visit.

Health Insurance
For some health plans, a visit with Dr. Hill may be considered “out of network” or may require prior authorization to be reimbursed by your insurance carrier. We will provide you with the necessary insurance forms to submit to your health plan; however, please be prepared to cover the payment in full on the day of your visit.
