Higher
Order Aberrations
No eye is perfect, which means that all eyes have at least some degree of
"aberration". Common imperfections, called "lower order aberrations", include
nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
"Higher order aberrations" are other imperfections in your eye's
optical system that may affect your vision clarity and how well you
see in low light or at night. These aberrations can produce
vision errors such as difficulty seeing at night, glare, halos, blurring,
starburst patterns, or double vision.
The chart above (courtesy of Alcon
Inc.) illustrates common shapes of aberrations created
when light passes through eyes using wavefront technology.
